Retailer exclusive variants are the most exciting corner of modern comics β and the easiest place to get burned. Small print runs, big hype, and listings that all look the same. Here's how to buy with confidence.
Red flag #1: stock photos
If a $30+ exclusive is listed with the publisher's promo image instead of actual photos of the book, walk away. Stock photos hide spine ticks, corner dings, and color rub. Any seller with the book in hand can photograph it. No photos, no sale.
Red flag #2: no print run stated
"LTD" isn't decoration β it's the whole value proposition. If a listing says "rare exclusive variant" but won't state the print run, the run isn't small. Sellers with LTD 500 say LTD 500. Sellers with 3,000 copies say "rare."
Red flag #3: vague condition language
"NM" means nothing without specifics. Honest sellers tell you about spine ticks, corner wear, and surface issues β especially on foil covers, which show every fingerprint. If the condition section is one word, assume the seller hasn't actually looked at the book.
Red flag #4: virgin that isn't virgin
This one drives me crazy. "Virgin" means no text on the cover β none. Some listings slap "virgin" on a trade dress cover and hope you don't notice until it arrives. Compare the photos to the words. If there's a logo, it isn't virgin.
What "bagged and boarded" should actually mean
Every comic you buy online should arrive in a bag with a backing board. That's the floor, not a feature. What separates good sellers:
- Gemini mailers or equivalent β rigid comic-specific mailers, not a bubble mailer and hope.
- No tape on the inside flap β so the mailer stays reusable and your book doesn't get a tape surprise.
- Filler so the book can't slide β a book rattling around a mailer is a damaged book.
Ask a seller how they pack before you buy. The good ones love telling you.
Why buy from a real shop
Marketplaces are fine, but a dedicated comic shop lives or dies on repeat buyers β which means condition honesty and packing quality aren't optional. At Keyframe Co, every exclusive in the shop is photographed for real, labeled exactly (virgin means virgin, foil means foil), bagged and boarded, and shipped in a Gemini mailer. If a book has a flaw, the listing says so.
That's the standard. Hold every seller to it β including me.
